Budapest!

Yesterday morning I got home from a weekend trip to Budapest, Hungary!
The two highlights of the trip were going to the Széchenyi Fürdő bath house on our first day, and then going to see a ballet of Gone With the Wind at the absolutely gorgeous Hungarian State Opera House.

When we arrived on Friday afternoon, we headed straight for one of the bath houses that Budapest is famous for. The place was ginormous, yellow, and gorgeous. There's halls and halls full of indoor baths, but they were kind of creepy and smelled strange. The outside bath, however, was a crazy marvelous experience. It was about 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and we had to jump over piles of snow to get into the water, which was interesting. Sitting in the super-warm water with the upper half of you in 30 degree wind is a surprisingly great feeling! (Being completely in the cold, however, was not... but I am willing to suffer for photographic documentation.)
Sunday night we saw Gone With the Wind, and let me tell you I ALMOST DIED OF EXCITEMENT. I love Gone With the Wind and I love ballerinas, and when you put them together you get HOOP SKIRT TUTUS! (Actually, there was a sad lack of anything hoop-skirt-like, but it was okay because it was still awesome.) I wore a dress that I borrowed from my little sister, not only because the skirt is fluffy and tu-tu like, but also because I had seen a couple of pictures of the interior of the opera house beforehand and realized that my dress matched it. How could I have passed up the opportunity to match my dress to my destination?? Besides, there's no such thing as being overdressed. =]

Okay, now prepare yourself for lots of shiny gilded things:

My dress in all its fluffy glory!

Aaaaaaand here's a zillion more pictures from the rest of the trip!
Street candy vendor! I have discovered a new love--marzipan balls! (I chose the pink with sprinkles! It tasted like bubblegum and cookie.)
The largest (and probably prettiest) synagogue in Europe!

Happy Pi(e) Day!

I would have loved to fully celebrate this day by making different pies for every meal, but alas, I have no oven. So, I will have to make do with these lovely pictures!

Shew! That's a lotta pie. All images come from this Tumblr, or from Pinterest when you type "pretty pies" into the search bar. The last one is a pie that I made about two years ago and remains one of my greatest life accomplishments.

What's YOUR favorite kind of pie?

March lilies! Also snow. (Or how to cheer yourself up when the weather is being unreasonable.)

Well, the lovely weather we experienced last week was chased off by a lot of snow. And apparently, the fine city of Brussels doesn't believe in snow plows, so that made for a very exciting walk to school (a giant slush-drift in the middle a busy road was involved.)
Having beautiful 69-degree weather in your grasp and then having it snatched away by the icy hands of winter can be a little disheartening. (By "disheartening" I mean "you become convinced that the weather is a conscious being that is JUST TRYING TO SPITE YOU and WHAT DID YOU EVER DO TO IT TO MAKE IT HATE YOU SO MUCH?!?!?!)

So, I brought some sun into my life in the following manner:

1. Put a big bow in my hair and donned my new favorite sweater,

2. Decorated the kitchen table with March lilies and cocktail decorations,

3.Made adorable tiny sandwiches with tiny toast! (and more cocktail decorations,)

4. And ate some lemon meringue pie.

(Basically, I just incorporated as much yellow and turquoise into my day as possible. And also incorporated as much food as possible.)

Now I smell the lovely scent of March lilies all the time! My grandparents have fields and fields of them at their farm this time of year, and they make me a little homesick and happy at the same time. =]

Here Comes the Sun!

It was 69 degrees and sunny out today! I can't even handle how gorgeous the weather was. I didn't wear tights or a coat and it was SO NICE! ZOMGIMSOHAPPYSPRINGISHERE!!! Huzzah for warmth!!

My dress came from The Nitty Gritty in Louisville and my sweater came from a place called Orsay at a train station in Germany.

Also, this past weekend I went back to Cologne, Germany to visit my Daddy who was there on a trip!
We visited Beethoven's house, a chocolate museum/factory, and saw lots of beautiful colorful buildings!
